Forget the serums, try these simple preventions for Maskne

Maskne, or acne from mask-wearing, is not anything unfamiliar to us these days. The humid environment in a mask from breathing, talking, or sweating is the perfect storm for clogged pores and skin irritation. There is just no way around it. Luckily, there are simple solutions to avoiding breakouts. No need to go out and buy the most expensive “miracle working” serum.

Maskne is not a new phenomenon. The medical term for it is acne mechanica - irritation from prolonged use of facial protection, such as helmets, glasses, goggles, or - you guessed it - face masks.

Loma Linda Health University Health reported in an article with institution dermatologist, Harry Dao MD, FAAD, there are a couple different skin conditions people have reported from mask-wearing; allergic contact dermatitis caused by an allergic reaction to masks treated with chemicals; rosacea flare-ups caused by heat and stress; inflamed skin and dry patches from seborrheic dermatitis; folliculitis when there is a yeast infection in the hair follicles.

Most doctors are suggesting simple solutions to prevent maskne, like washing your face first, applying a moisturizer, skipping makeup, and being mindful choosing the right mask.

When it comes to moisturizer, American Academy of Dermatology Association board-certified dermatologist Carrie L. Kovarik, MD, FAAD, said in an article about preventing maskne, to use one with either ceramides, hyaluronic acid, or dimethicone.

Additionally, be mindful with your mask. You may not realize it, but some manufactured masks are chemically-treated for sanitation and now banned in some states, like Tennessee. The best bet is to invest in your own fabric face mask. Opt for a breathable, lightweight fabric, like a natural cotton mask, and ensure the fit is just right to avoid irritation.

Keep that baby clean by machine washing or hand washing it. Kovarik says to use hot water and a fragrance-free, hypoallergenic laundry detergent for machine washing.

Try taking these few extra steps to prevent maskne before investing in any product. They will only add a couple minutes to any daily routine and save your wallet.
