Song-Inspired Outfit

The sound of my blaring alarm reminds me that it’s another early morning getting up for class. As I struggle to stay awake while I’m getting ready, I put on my favorite music to lift my spirits. I find that the music I listen to in the morning almost always impacts the outfit I choose for the day. Slow moody music might make me pick a laid-back look with subdued colors, while an upbeat positive song may influence an open and bright outfit. Since fashion and music are both mediums of art, they can combine to create beautiful moments.

Here are three of my favorite songs with the outfits I think they would inspire!

Landslide” by Fleetwood Mac is a soft, subdued song about the realization that you are growing up. This outfit has softness in the sweater, and the wool fabric in the skirt/jacket set mirrors the quiet and fluttery guitar. Yet, the outfit also gets a sense of maturity from the blazer-like coat that plays into the overall themes of growing up in the lyrics. Lastly, the neutral colors can be seen in the simple and pulled back composition of the song.

Levitating” by Dua Lipa was one of the largest pop anthems of the year. An outfit inspired by this song would have strong, bold, and chic elements. This look would belong to a woman of importance who knows her worth and is not afraid to flaunt it. This look is trendy yet also has timeless qualities, much like the song. The stark contrast in the neon green to black is a playful move that is reflected in the fun and playful lyrics.

Lastly, we have an outfit inspired by the song “August” by Taylor Swift. This dreamy pop song tells the story of unrequited summer love which is expressed in the innocent summer aesthetic of the inspired outfit. On the outside, she is soft and beautiful, but on the inside, she is yearning for love. This outfit tells this story further in the intricate details of the beading on the dress. On the upper bodice, there is a heart beaded to the shape of the body. While this is very flattering to the garment, it is also a subtle nod to the tragic romance of the song.

These three outfits show how music inspires outfits that can further the story of a song. Art can tell stories through many mediums, and when music and fashion are used together, the results can be inspiring.
