Victoria Nelon was our So Hot Right Now in January of 2019 and then she joined our team. Since becoming a Buttoned babe, she has been a photographer, writer and she has helped run the Instagram. Nelon is graduating in May and her presence in Buttoned is going to be missed. She is warm, welcoming, real, funny and so stylish. Nelon never goes unnoticed. Remember her name, because you will read about her one day in Vogue.

How would you describe your style in three words?

Androgynus, casual and comfortable.

When getting dressed for the day, what does the process of selecting an outfit look like?

Normally, I find one piece that I will center an outfit around. Whether that is jewelry, shoes or a statement pant, I like to focus an outfit around one thing.

Where are some of your favorite places to shop?

Normally, I go thrifting for everything, but I have loved shopping online recently. I like Urban Outfitters, Depop, and sometimes, I’ll go on Poshmark for fun. I don't really like buying from fast fashion businesses because I would rather buy something that someone else has previously owned.

What role does fashion play in your life?

Fashion has been something I have loved since I was a child. I started sewing, thinking that being a designer was the only thing I could do, but then I realized there are so many opportunities besides just being a designer in the business. I love that fashion is subjective and it is your own opinion, not others telling you what you should wear but the things you love to wear without those opinions.

Who do you look up to in terms of style?

Daniel Fletcher is my favorite designer in terms of menswear designers, because those are the clothes I love to make, but I have many other stylists I love. Maaeve Reilly, who is a celebrity stylist, or Beth Jones, who does funky outfits that I personally would never wear, but I love that she owns her own style.

What is one of your favorite trends at the moment?

My favorite trend currently is probably chains, piercings or rings. I like a lot of trends because I am always around fashion since we study trend forecasting. There are outside influences of fashion, and I like that people are starting to add piercings to their outfits and different jewelry to accent the outfit they are wearing,

What is one piece of clothing that you couldn’t live without?

One piece of clothing I couldn't live without would have to be a good pair of jeans. Jeans are something you can keep for many years if they are made right and comfortable for the person wearing them. I love the current pair I have from GAP because they are the perfect comfort jeans.

What is a closet staple that you think everyone should own?

Hmm, that’s a hard one, but I would have to say a closet staple is a jean jacket or a nice t-shirt. I have many t-shirts that I love to layer with a jean jacket, button-ups, things like that. You also can’t go wrong with a big t-shirt with a turtleneck underneath, because it’s comfy yet stylish.

What are your plans for the upcoming year?

I am going to grad school to get my Masters in Fashion Styling, Creative Direction and Digital Content at Istituto Marangoni in London, England. Kinda terrifying, but probably the most exciting thing that I am about to go through.

What fashion advice would you like to leave with our readers?

The biggest thing I wish I knew at a young age was to be yourself, have confidence and don't be afraid to wear anything you like. Don't worry about others and what they think, but enjoy your own style even if it isn't “trendy.”
